Traditional vs. Tailored Coaching Approaches

Many coaches train based on the processes that helped them build their own successful businesses. They may have crack team-building skills, perfect time management methods, and unparalleled sales techniques – all things that worked wonders for them. However, these processes are typically grounded in their personality traits, core values, and work styles. While this is not inherently wrong, it often fails to consider the differing values, operational methods, and motivational drives of others.

A great coach understands that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. They don’t just parrot their success formulas but instead ask probing questions to get a deep sense of who you are, what drives you, and how you can run your business most effectively. This personalized approach is crucial for aligning their proven methodologies to your unique operational style, making it exponentially more likely for you to experience success.

The Power of The Right Questions for a Successful Business

Successful coaching isn’t just about receiving answers; it’s about receiving the right answers for building a successful business. The internet has a plethora of information on running a business, but what it lacks is tailored guidance. By working with a coach, you’re not just looking for rapid answers but for informed, customized advice that complements your objectives and style.

Too often, coaches rely heavily on their own experiences, providing pre-recorded training sessions and holding office hours where they solve issues brought up by clients. While this approach is effective to some extent, it doesn’t offer the in-depth transformation that successful businesses truly need. An exceptional coach continuously asks questions to delve deeper into your operations, uncovering issues you might not even know exist. This proactive approach can bring about insights that are wholly tailored to your business needs, ensuring long-term success.

Collaboration Over Dictation

A significant sign that your coaching relationship might not be as effective as it could be lies in the communication approach. If your coach is merely talking at you, delivering instructions without engaging in meaningful conversations about your feedback and concerns, they’re not serving you optimally.

True collaboration involves talking with you – listening to your feedback, adapting their advice, and working together to tailor processes uniquely suited to your path. This collaborative approach transforms the coaching relationship into a genuine partnership, fostering significant progress towards your business goals.

Tailored Strategies for Real Success

An excellent way to see the impact of tailored coaching is through practical examples. Imagine a client who was struggling to scale their business into a successful business, despite following their previous coach’s advice meticulously. This coach provided frameworks based solely on their own experiences, without considering the client’s unique way of thinking, motivations, or energy levels. The client felt demotivated and stuck.

Enter a new coach who started the relationship with a simple question, “How do you feel about this? Is there anything that feels off to you?” This one query opened the doors to deeper, more personalized dialogues. The coach and client together tweaked strategies to align with the client’s personality and working style. The result? A significant breakthrough. The client began to transform their business into a successful one, experiencing major success without feeling overwhelmed or burned out.

Evaluating Your Coaching Relationship

If you’re not achieving the business success you desire, it’s essential to assess whether your coach is the right fit. Here are some fundamental questions to consider:

  1. Right Questions:

Is your coach asking questions that dig deep to uncover underlying issues affecting your mindset and business strategies?

  2. Community Integration:

If part of a coaching program or mastermind, does your coach and their team facilitate your integration into the community, making you feel valued and supported?

  3. Communication Style:

Are they talking at you or with you?

Are they adjusting their guidance based on your feedback, thereby fostering a collaborative environment?

If you find your current coaching relationship lacking in any of these areas, it may be time to reassess and communicate your needs more clearly.

Conclusion: Taking Initiative and Communicating Needs

Ultimately, successful coaching is a two-way street. It’s not just the coach’s responsibility to adapt and engage; you must also take initiative. Clearly communicate your needs and give regular feedback to the coach. This collaborative effort ensures that the coaching strategy is continually refined to fit your working style, goals, and aspirations.

In summary, a truly transformative coaching experience lies in the personalization of strategies that align with your unique needs and values. If you feel your current coaching setup isn’t yielding results, it’s time to dig deeper into the dynamics of the relationship. Don’t hesitate to voice your needs and seek a coach who collaborates with you, helping you unlock your full potential.

Ever feel like you are doing everything your coach tells you, but you are still not seeing the success with your business that you are aiming for? It’s frustrating, right? You’re putting in all the time, effort and energy, but sometimes it still isn’t clicking. Could it be that the real issue isn’t with you, but with how your coach is coaching? Today we are diving into the often overlooked factor that could be holding you back from achieving a true successful business. And trust me, this is something that could come completely change the way you approach your coaching relationship. If you’re new here, I’m Yvonne Heimann, aka Yvi from AskYvi.com, where I help digital entrepreneurs turn their passion into profit by automating their business so they can dominate the industry and create lasting business success. Let’s talk about what most people get wrong about coaching. A lot of coaches train and coach based on the process that helped them build their own successful business. But the problem is those processes are often based on their personality, their core values and how their team works and thinks. There’s nothing wrong with those processes.

Yvonne Heimann [00:01:13]:
They clearly led to success with their business and probably other businesses that they taught it to. A great coach knows that it’s not a one size fits all solution. Instead of just teaching you their way, a great coach asks you the right questions to understand your values, how you process information and how you work best. How are you the most productive? They align their process, which is proven with your unique needs, which is key to building your own successful business. Now, why is it not just about getting answers from your coach? That’s the critical point. It’s not just about getting any old answers. You could just google the damn thing. Yes, working with a coach is faster than just googling the damn thing and breaking the thing.

Yvonne Heimann [00:02:02]:
You get their knowledge and their expertise, but it is actually about getting the right answers that are tailored to you and your goals to be successful with your business. Too often, coaches rely on their own experience and throw up prerecorded trainings and hold a couple office hours expecting you to bring up all the problems you are having for them to then solve them. Sure, that’s one step. There’s nothing wrong about it, but it’s not going to get you to that next level of business success. An amazing coach takes things further. They continuously ask you questions to dive deeper and deeper and deeper into how you operate and help you uncover the things you didn’t even know you needed to ask about. Ever heard about the thing I didn’t know what I didn’t know. That’s where this piece comes in and that’s where amazing coaches are so great at helping you build a successful business.

Yvonne Heimann [00:03:00]:
They don’t wait for you to figure out what’s missing. They are proactively helping you reach your full potential and build the successful business that you want to build. Now this is exactly where the magic happens. The impact of your coaching can completely change when your coach asks the right question. Now your coach is also going to tell you you have to ask the right questions. But sometimes we don’t even know what the right questions are. And that’s where your coach comes in to guide you to figure out those right questions. A great coach will push you to reflect, think deeper and really uncover what’s truly holding you back from your success in business.

Yvonne Heimann [00:03:41]:
Usually it’s not processes, it’s your mindset. So if your coach is giving you simply surface level advice, like how to use a tool or manage this task, or here’s a sales funnel, just implement it. That’s not what you need for real transformation. Google can give you those answers. But if you are looking for true business success, it’s about conversations that help you unlock the power within you. That’s where the right questions will lead you to the breakthrough you need to build that successful business. Now let’s talk about how this shows up in a coaching relationship. Is your coach only talking AT you, or are they talking WITH you? This is one major problem I have seen my students run into with past coaches, that their past coaches were talking at them instead of with them.

Yvonne Heimann [00:04:35]:
So what’s the difference? Talking at you means they’re delivering information without engaging you in the conversation. It’s all one sided. Talking with you means they’re listening to your feedback, adjusting their approach, and working with you to find the best solution for your path to a successful business. If your coach is just talking at you, you are likely going to feel like a passive receiver of information, which limits the impact of the coaching you are receiving. But when a coach talks with you, it opens up real collaboration. It becomes a partnership which can lead to significant progress in your business success. So not only do you have the fast track of knowing which process is the most efficient, you are also optimizing and customizing that process to your personal needs. And here’s a personal example.

Yvonne Heimann [00:05:28]:
I had a client who was seriously stuck in scaling their business because their previous coach only taught them based on their own experience, not considering my clients unique needs, how they were thinking, how they are motivated and how they’re energized. So when I came in and started working with them, I simply asked, how do you feel about this? Is there anything that feels off to you? That one single question opened up a deeper dialogue, allowing us to to tweak the strategy to fit their personality. Not only that, if there is a resistance in my students, in my clients, that tells me there is something we want to look at, if that is a limiting belief, if that is a misunderstanding, if it just doesn’t align with them. Digging deep and having this conversation with my client soon after, they started seeing major success with their business and they felt relieved. They felt at ease. There was no overwhelm, there was no burnout, there was no stress because it was completely aligned with them, their goals and their personality. Now, how do you know if your coach is the right fit? If you’re not seeing success with your business that you are hoped for, it is easy to think the problem is you. Or the problem is the process, or the problem is your coach.

Yvonne Heimann [00:06:48]:
But before you go down those rabbit holes, ask yourself a few key questions to evaluate whether your coach is truly speaking the right question and communicating clearly with you to help you on your journey towards a successful business. First, is your coach asking the right question? Are they helping you dig deeper and uncover what’s really going on underneath all of the things of running your business? What’s happening with your mindset? What are the strategies, aka habits, you are running that make you procrastinate or help you be more motivated? A great coach won’t just skim the purpose and throw a process at you. They’ll be proactive in helping you uncover those things and those patterns you didn’t even realize were holding you back from your business success? Second, if you joined a coaching program or mastermind that includes a community, you should also ask yourself, what’s your coach and your team doing to integrate you in this group? If you joined a mastermind and the other members are already having an established relationship, it can feel daunting to break into this community on your own. But here’s the thing. An amazing coach or their team will take proactive steps to ensure you are integrated within this group quickly. This way, you can focus on the work that will lead you to success with your business instead of spending all of your energy trying to get acquainted with everybody and building those relationships. Is your coach and their team facilitating introductions, creating space for collaboration and ensuring you feel like a valuable part of the cohort from day one? If not, that’s a red flag. Lastly, are they talking with you or at you.

Yvonne Heimann [00:08:33]:
If you’re receiving information without any true dialogue, that can limit your growth. You want a coach who listens, adapts and engages with you, working alongside you as a partner to really build that successful business. Now it’s not just all on your coach and the team. Again, we all perceive situation differently and it is on you to take control and say what you need. So how do you address issues with a coach? Number one, take initiative. Take your power back and don’t wait for things to just improve on their own. Take a first step and address the problem with your coach and your team. Clearly communicate your needs.

Yvonne Heimann [00:09:11]:
Be clear with your coach about what’s not working for you. That is your responsibility. Let them know you need a more personalized approach to reach your business success goals, but also seek feedback. Ask your coach for regular feedback on the progress, collaborating and adjusting your strategy with your coach to better align with how you work so you can build that successful business. Now, in your next coaching session, pay attention to the questions being asked. Are they helping you discover the answers you need to build a successful business that’s tailored to you, or are they just reflecting on somebody else’s experience? If you are ready for a coaching experience that digs deeper than just the digital processes that run our business and actually focuses on you and helps you build your path to a successful business, head on over to AskYvi.com and let’s talk about how I can help you automate your business to dominate your industry.
